چکیده

objectives we assessed the prevalence of three common viruses including; respiratory syncytial virus (rsv), human rhinovirus (hrv), and human metapneumovirus (hmpv), in children with acute wheezing. patients and methods ninety six wheezy children, 48 males (50%) and 48 females (50%)under the age of 5 years, were enrolled in the study. all patients visited as outpatients or inpatients when referred to the mofid children hospital, in tehran, from september 2009 to march 2010. a nasopharyngeal sample was taken from each child’s nostril and the three viruses were detected by a molecular polymerase chain reaction method (pcr). results out of 96 patients, 63 cases (64.8%) had a positive pcr test for at least one virus. prevalence of each virus including rsv, hrv and hmpv alone or in combination were 44 (45.8%), 13 (13.5%) and 6 (6.3%), respectively. there were no significant relationships between;age, prematurity, fever, respiratory distress and the existence of any kind of virus in the nasopharynx. conclusions our study revealed that the prevalence of these three viruses in the nasopharyngeal secretions of children suffering from acute wheezing was similar to other studies. the results of this study concluded; pcr assay is a widely available and rapid method to detect the viral etiology which induces wheezing in children in iran, and the study also provides a baseline for future studies about the clinical importance of this relationship. background viruses are known to cause the majority of acute respiratory infections. a great deal of evidence indicates that the etiology of most cases of wheezing in children, like asthma or bronchiolitis, is also linked to such respiratory infections.

Human Metapneumovirus and Respiratory Syncytial Virus Disease in Children, Yemen

Factors increasing the severity of respiratory infections in developing countries are poorly described. We report factors associated with severe acute respiratory illness in Yemeni children (266 infected with respiratory syncytial virus and 66 with human metapneumovirus). Age, indoor air pollution, and incomplete vaccinations were risk factors and differed from those in industrialized countries.

Human Metapneumovirus and Respiratory Syncytial Virus, Brazil

We describe the epidemiologic and clinical characteristics of 111 children attending clinics and hospitals in Aracaju, northeast Brazil, with acute respiratory infections attributable to human metapneumovirus (HMPV), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), or both in May and June 2002. Fifty-three (48%) children were infected with RSV alone, 19 (17%) with HMPV alone, and 8 (7%) had RSV/HMPV co-infec...

Human metapneumovirus and respiratory syncytial virus detection in young children with acute bronchiolitis.

This study was conducted to detect human metapneumovirus (hMPV) and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in young children hospitalized with acute bronchiolitis, using reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Nasopharyngeal secretions were collected from 170 children between 1 and 24 months of age admitted to two tertiary hospitals in northeastern Thailand, between 2002 and 2004. ...

Infantile respiratory syncytial virus and human rhinovirus infections: respective role in inception and persistence of wheezing.

There is evidence that respiratory viruses play a key role in the development and exacerbation of obstructive respiratory diseases in children. This review attempts to juxtapose the separate profiles and prototypes of pathogenetic mechanisms represented by the two most common amongst such viruses: respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and human rhinovirus (HRV). RSV represents the most common agent...

Human respiratory syncytial virus and metapneumovirus in patients with acute respiratory infection in Colombia, 2000 - 2011.

OBJECTIVE To describe the epidemiology of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and human metapneumovirus (hMPV) in Colombia from 2000 - 2011, including seasonal trends. METHODS Nasopharyngeal aspirates and/or throat swabs from 14 870 patients with acute respiratory infections (ARI) were studied. Two subgroups were analyzed using molecular biology techniques. The first consisted of 264 RSV indire...

the prevalence of human metapneumovirus and respiratory syncytial virus and coinfection with both in hospitalized children with acute respiratory infection in south of iran

conclusions infection with hmpv and rsv are most frequent infections among pediatric patients with respiratory tract symptoms. coinfection with these viruses may exacerbate the clinical symptoms and increase hospitalization rates, especially in children younger than one year old. results the hmpv and rsv were detected in 44 (15.7%) and 84 (30.0%) samples, respectively. coinfection with both vir...
